Edison Teaching and Learning Center

Edison Teaching and Learning Center is an approved vendor for the State of Oregon Dyslexia Training. All course goals are provided by the Orton-Gillingham Academy training curriculum, which can be found online here. The Academy is accredited by the International Dyslexia Association.

All course offerings are conducted at Edison High School: 9020 SW Beaverton Hillsdale Highway, Portland, OR 97225.

The required book, The Magic of Orton-Gillingham, can be purchased by emailing an order form to Lynn Lamping at the Oregon Dyslexia Institute.

OGA Subscriber Course

OGA Subscriber Course

This course must be completed before attending the Basics or Classroom Educator. Click this link to take the course.

Classroom Educator K-3

$1,050

Prerequisite: Bachelor's Degree, OGA Subscriber Course

$1,050 + required OGA Subscriber Course, textbook, and visual card deck to be purchased separately.

This course is designed for classroom teachers teaching grades K - 3. The first three days of this course cover dyslexia and the structure of the English language. The next two days cover how to implement the course using OGA principles in your K-3 classroom. It meets the coursework requirements of the Orton-Gillingham Academy Classroom Educator Level. Interventionists who teach small groups are encouraged to take the Associate course.

Practicum offered for an additional fee. Completion of the practicum is required to apply to the Academy for membership at the Classroom Educator Level. You are not considered to be Orton-Gillingham trained until you have completed a practicum experience and your application to the Academy at the Classroom Educator level has been approved.


The required textbook, Unlocking the Power of Print, should be purchased as soon as possible, as the shipping may be longer than expected. If you do not have a complete visual and auditory drill deck, you must purchase the "Basic Sound Deck, " which will be used during class.

OGA Associate Level

Comprises two parts: 1) The Basics & 2) Associate Level

$2,100 + required OGA Subscriber Course, textbook, and visual card deck to be purchased separately.

The Basics

The Basics will be taught twice this summer and those participating in the Associate Level course must attend one before attending the rest of the Associate Level.

Session A) July 8, 2024; 8 AM - 3:30 PM PDT

Session B) July 22, 2024; 8 AM - 3:30 PM PDT




Associate Level

July 29 - August 2, 2024 8 am -3:30 pm PST

September 21, 2024; 8 am - 12 am PST

October 5, 2024; 8 am - 12 am PST

November 2, 2024; 8 am -12 pm PST

This course is designed for interventionists. The course delves further into the structure of the English language and includes assessment and lesson planning for 1:1 and small-group instruction. The course also includes incorporating grammar and writing into an OG lesson. The course meets the coursework requirements of the Orton-Gillingham Academy Associate Level coursework.

Please contact Elizabeth Johnson if you took Associate 1: Classroom Educator in the past and want to become certified at the Associate level.

Certified Part 1

September 28, October 19, November 16, 2024, and January 18, 2025 (8 am to 12 pm PST)

This course focuses on assessments and writing a profile and annotated lesson at the Certified level. The first week will cover assessments. The first three Saturday sessions will focus on the profile, and the last Saturday session will focus on the annotated lesson. A minimum of 100 hours of coursework is required at the Certified level and is offered in two parts. Certified Part 1 and Part 2 courses can be taken in any order.

Practicum offered for an additional fee. Completion of the practicum is required to apply to the Academy for membership at the Associate Level. You are not considered to be Orton-Gillingham trained until you have completed a practicum experience and your application to the Academy at the Associate level has been approved.

Classroom Educator Practicum

$1,000

The Practicum incorporates diagnostic and prescriptive feedback and support for every aspect of the Orton-Gillingham Approach. The 50-hour supervised practicum is over 8 consecutive months (minimum) which includes 5 observations of the trainee teaching complete lessons in a group (of at least 2 students) or classroom setting conducted by the Fellow.

Associate Practicum

$2,000

The Practicum incorporates diagnostic and prescriptive feedback and support for every aspect of the Orton-Gillingham Approach. The 100-hour supervised practicum is over 8 consecutive months (minimum), which includes 10 entire 40-60 minute lesson observations of the trainee conducted by a Fellow.

Option A: 100 hours teaching 1:1

Option B: 50 hours 1:1 and 50 hours teaching in a group (of at least 2 students) or classroom setting

Certified Practicum

$2,000

The Practicum incorporates diagnostic and prescriptive feedback and support for every aspect of the Orton-Gillingham Approach. The 200-hour supervised practicum is over 2 academic years, minimum (in addition to the 100 hours at Associate for a total of 300 hours), which includes 10 entire 40-60 minute lesson observations of the trainee by a Fellow. The practicum is with 2 different students: 1 at the lower level of language instruction and 1 at a higher level of language instruction.
